I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field. Even when I was a kid I knew that I wanted to be in the medical field. I originally thought I wanted to be a doctor and then I heard about radiation therapy after a friend's mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and the experience that I saw through that family made me want to do that for a living.
It seems like when a person finds out they have cancer, they're rushed from one place to the next and they have one appointment after another. No one really takes the time to sit with them and hold their hand and ask them how they feel about what they've just been told. It's usually an unexpected diagnosis. I feel like when they come to me, I'm the first person who gets a chance to take the time with them and explain to them that they're going to be ok and that they're in good hands, answer questions, make them feel better, and usually patients come anywhere from a couple of weeks up to nine weeks. So we get a chance to really get to know each person, their hobbies, their interests, about their grandchildren and their life, and so I feel like the most rewarding part is getting to build a relationship with the patients. A lot of people think it's a depressing job, but my answer is that it's always very rewarding.
