I work with lymphedema as an outpatient service or an inpatient if needed. So that is one of my specialties that I work at. Lymphedema is a chronic swelling because of blockage of the lymph node for different reasons. There's primary lymphedema and secondary lymphedema. So primary is usually something that happens with heredity and secondary is usually to insect bite, elephantitis is a case in point, or due to surgery where the lymph nodes were extracted or chronic infections that cause obstruction to the lymph nodes. Typically it happens after cancer surgery. That several lymph nodes get taken out and the channels get blocked. So how it stands today, there is only management of lymphedema that's why it's really important that a person catches it earlier because the earlier you catch it the easier it is to manage it. There is no cure for it, you can only control the swelling, that's the sad part of it. So basically in a nutshell I teach people how to take better skin care because of the swelling a lot of swell arise or vice versa the skin is not taken care of. That's what the onset is about, that's how it starts. So we emphasize a lot on skin care, we have a series of specialty exercise that are devised to mobilize fluid in a certain direction so that it gets absorbed better. We also teach them compression bandaging and the person is taught to do it on their own; hopefully their body part will be as close to the normal size as they can get it. And then the person is to wear a permanent compression garment or sleeve on their body. So to provide them education for that we tell them their resources. I try to organize groups sometimes so my patients can talk to each other. We have some wonder nurse here with a breast cancer support group. A lot of our patients come into that support group so we're active in that way.
